Some boosts are beneficial in certain builds (such as Whistan's shield in FB sorcs) while others can bring significant value to certain collectors.

Some items have a built-in boos, which is less effective when upgraded. For example the Goldwrap offers an additional potion slots. These are usually upgraded to add value to a close-to-perfect or perfect item.

Costs

Upgrades are accompanied by certain costs associated with them. The first is the cost for the upgrade. This cost depends on the new ilvl of the item and the number of perks it gains and can be costly. It is also costly to upgrade an item to a higher tier (such as Explorer > Champion, or Veteran > Heroic).

The second is the cost of the materials needed for an upgrade. These items are usually Power Dices (dropped from monsters 21+), Minerals and Erons or a specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor Quests. The amount of these items required can be seen in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.

The process of upgrading an item is a complex process that takes time. Depending on the size of the upgrade, it could take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours. The stats that are the base of the upgraded item are calculated based on its new ilvl and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonuses, damage dice, as well as other vital statistics. In some cases an upgrade may grant additional perks. These perks are offered in a list.

In rare instances the upgrade will only replace the highest-costing perks.
